NEW - Download Packet Ninja ver 0.8 Feedback sounds have been added for hits and misses. Remember, SMS Notification has been added. Be sure to read this page to get it working decently and effortlessly. Onwards to the next iteration... The interval selection now goes from 1 sec to 5 mins and then has a fastest option, which has the potential to flood your network - use with caution. What is the Packet Ninja? I have noticed a pattern with my ISP - between 07h00 and 09h00 each work day, my connection dies for a few seconds. I confronted them and they blamed the telco. The telco inspected the line and found no problems. They insisted their systems were working. So, I developed a monitor to prove my claims.
After a few weeks of work on this software and a couple of days of arguing, my conclusive proof is now being taken into account as they try to diagnose the real cause. The Packet Ninja is the result of this disagreement. I needed software to monitor my connection 24/7 and to produce results that could not be contested. I wondered how many other people had the same problem, so I developed the software into a more user-friendly commercial release - and called it the Packet Ninja! I do of course realise that more utility is expected out of commercial software and a roadmap for the development of extra features is included below. Primarily, the Packet Sentry will test connections and monitor internet services, including HTTP, FTP and mail, and alert administrators via SMS of fallovers. I hope you find this as useful as I have.
Packet Ninja Roadmap and Pricing As this version stands, it is a fully-functioning connection monitor tool and it is therefore being sold at an initial price of €15. I believe this is a reasonable rate to charge for a tool of this nature. It is dirt-cheap for the kind of tool it will become. Early adopters risking death-in-infancy will gain a really cheap tool for their risks. Registrations made during the growth and launch phases of the tool will be discounted yet complete for the final release. The reason I have taken this approach is to gauge the interest of the network community at large in such a tool. This will justify the amount of expense and attention I pay to its development. The basic feature set that I guarantee in the full release will include several tests: • connection monitor (based on the Ping protocol); • a website monitor (using http to retrieve a specific file); and • an email send/deliver set (using SMTP and POP). The final release will also feature follow-up tools for administration: • Save graphs and logs (to send to your ISP, for example); • Configure actions based on rules (restart after 20 failures, for example); and • SMS notification via a supported GSM modem. v0.5 - July 2007 INITIAL RELEASE (€15) v0.6 thru 0.9 - July through September BUG FIXES & FEATURE TESTS • Speed redefintion (0.8) • Feedback sounds (0.8) • Internal testing (0.7) • Memory leak on continuous testing fixed (0.6) • SMS notification added (0.6) • Log file save fixed (0.6) v1.0 - latest October 2007 FULL RELEASE DISCOUNTED(€20) • Ping, HTTP, SMTP, POP test suite • Follow-up rules and actions • Built-in SMS notification • Save graphs v1.1 - end November 2007 FULL RELEASE (€40) • Feasable feature requests • Interface modernisation • PDF Manual OTHER TITLES Heritage has been discontinued - bug fixes outweighed viability.
