NEW - Download Packet Ninja ver 0.6 To set up SMS notifications, your first step is to have a GSM modem connected. Note the following: • The device may not function if it is also the primary network connection. • Any GSM device that supports the AT+C standard on the modem port should work • Tested devices includes Series 60 Nokias, Motorolas and Sony Ericsson • Sharkpods and Hauwei modems should also work • Connection via USB, USB-to-Serial (Keyspan eg) and Bluetooth should all work - please report back • Wired modem connections should not require setup if they already work for Internet Connect Special Note: Using a ordinary mobile phone Make sure that the device is connected to power if it is not powered by the serial connection. Otherwise, once the battery runs flat, the system is useless. Setting up SMS Notifications: Adding a Bluetooth GSM Modem Open System Preferences. Click Bluetooth. If the device is not added, go through the process to add it then select it from the list and click Edit Serial Ports. If no serial ports exist, click the plus sign to add one then click on the newly-added port and make sure that its settings match the screenshot. The port name can be anything but it should be easier if you call it "Ninja" (the default). Set the service to Dial-Up Networking and the port type to modem. IMPORTANT: Unless you need it in Network, make sure it is not shown. Also, remove the requirement for authentication. On the device, add your Mac as a preferred or favourite or authorised device (terminology varies). If you do not do this, the device will remain in a state requiring intervention to allow a connection. Launch Packet Ninja and go to your preferences (Command, or from the application menu). To enable notifications, follow these steps: (1) Check the box for failure notifications (2) Enter the mobile number to receive the notification (3) Select the port to which it is connected (see above, for examle) (4) Enter any initialisation string that may be required - ATZ should be fine (5) Set the threshhold: After this many failures, the SMS text will be sent (6) Enter the message to be sent (7) Click the test button - you should receive the notification on the number entered above
